These materials are provided as a supplement to the training course. You do not need to print the Training Manual to attend class. If you would like a hard copy, one will be provided at the first meeting.
IS-317: Introduction to Community Emergency Response Teams
Introduction to CERT is an online course offered through FEMA and covers much of the same material as the in-person classroom training. Participants will gain an understanding of the role of CERT during a disaster, and some basic tools for dealing with emergency situations.
While IS-317 is useful as a primer or refresher for CERT training, it is not equivalent to, and cannot be used in place of, the classroom delivery of the CERT Basic Training. To become a CERT volunteer, one must complete the classroom training offered by a local government agency such as the emergency management agency, fire or police department.
IS-100.C: Introduction to the Incident Command System
ICS is the standardized operational structure used by all major public safety organizations to respond to incidents of any size. CERT members need to become familiar with the basic functions and roles within ICS, as well as the principles of Manageable Span of Control and Chain of Command.
Because of the importance of organizational awareness during an actual emergency. volunteers wishing to join a CERT team must present a certificate of completion for IS-100.C prior to deployment.
