The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program educates volunteers about disaster preparedness for the hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. CERT offers a consistent, nationwide approach to volunteer training and organization that professional responders can rely on during disaster situations, allowing them to focus on more complex tasks.
Paso Robles CERT is sponsored by Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services, and participates with them in their public safety education programs. In addition, Paso Robles CERT offers two basic disaster preparedness classes each year for family members, provides a program for teens, and conducts supplemental training for volunteers, such as traffic and crowd management, emergency radio communications, flood response, and electric hazards for first responders. Paso Robles CERT volunteers have responded to several flood incidents, provided traffic and crowd management during events, and assisted in weed abatement inspections in the city.
Wildfires, earthquakes, floods, extreme heat, and power outages frequently occur in our area. Why not contact us and take the CERT: Basic Training Course and become a volunteer?
September is National Preparedness Month, selected because one of our worst national disasters happened on September 11, 2001. This year’s Preparedness Campaign is to remind everyone that preparing for emergencies and disasters can keep them, their families, and their communities safe. The resources and information we will share with you during National Preparedness Month can be used by anyone at any time to get prepared for whatever may come their way. The Preparedness Campaign aims to ensure all of our friends and neighbors have the tools they need to prepare for disasters and build resilience before disaster strikes.
The Campaign theme for 2024 is “Start a Conversation.” Talking about bad things that could happen like a disaster or emergency isn’t always easy. We may think we’re protecting the people we love by avoiding these conversations, but they are important to start taking steps to get ready and stay safe. Starting a conversation today can help you, your family, neighbors, and co-workers to take actions to prepare.
Over the next several weeks, we will provide you with information about the 5 steps to prepare for disasters:
(1) Get Notifications and Alerts – Sign up with your local Reverse 911 System.
(2) Make a Plan – How you would evacuate and where family members would meet up.
(3) Assemble a Go Bag – The most important things such as documents, medications, etc.
(4) Make a Stay Box – For when you cannot leave your home.
(5) Help Others – Be ready to help others and let others know if you need assistance.
We will also introduce you to some of our Partners in Public Safety - FEMA, American Red Cross, San Luis Obispo County Office of Emergency Services, and PG&E. They offer additional resources for disaster preparedness.
CERT Basic Training
CERT Basic Training is a 20 hour course that provides individuals with the basic knowledge and skills required to respond to their community’s immediate needs in the aftermath of a disaster, when emergency services are not immediately available. By working together, CERT volunteers can help save lives and protect property using the basic techniques in this course. The target audience for this course is individuals who desire the skills and knowledge required to prepare for and respond to a disaster. Our next class will be offered in October, 2024.
