The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program educates volunteers about disaster preparedness for the hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. CERT offers a consistent, nationwide approach to volunteer training and organization that professional responders can rely on during disaster situations, allowing them to focus on more complex tasks.
Paso Robles CERT is sponsored by Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services, and participates with them in their public safety education programs. In addition, Paso Robles CERT offers two basic disaster preparedness classes each year for family members, provides a program for teens, and conducts supplemental training for volunteers, such as traffic and crowd management, emergency radio communications, flood response, and electric hazards for first responders. Paso Robles CERT volunteers have responded to several flood incidents, provided traffic and crowd management during events, and assisted in weed abatement inspections in the city.
Wildfires, earthquakes, floods, extreme heat, and power outages frequently occur in our area. Why not contact us and take the CERT: Basic Training Course and become a volunteer?
National Tsunami Preparedness Week begins March 22nd and runs through March 30th to remind people who work, live, and play along California's coastline how to prepare for a tsunami and what to do when one occurs. Remember that a tsunami is a series of powerful, fast moving waves, and even one with a peak wave height of only 2 - 3 feet can flood coastal communities, impact harbor traffic and infrastructure, and cause other damage and casualties. They can be caused by large offshore earthquakes, landslides, volcanic eruptions , and even meteorite impacts. If the source is distant, you may have hours before waves arrive, but if nearby, mere minutes.
To prepare for a tsunami, learn your zone by getting a tsunami zone map at www.TsunamiZone.org/knowyourzone, and sign up for local emergency alerts. Sit down with the whole family and identify tsunami danger zones and tsunami safety zones. Select routes that family members can use to evacuate from danger zones whether they are at work, school, or home. If you are just visiting the
coast, look for the blue and white tsunami evacuation route signs or identify where there is high ground.
Warning signs of a tsunami are trembling beneath the ground, sudden withdrawal of water along the shoreline. bubbling in the tidal areas, and loud rumbling noise. Chances are that if you encounter any of these signs, a tsunami is imminent. Run! Go to high ground and stay there. I you cannot reach high ground, seek refuge in a recently build multi-story building. Obtain updates on the situation with your cell phone.

CERT Basic Training
CERT Basic Training is a 20 hour course that provides individuals with the basic knowledge and skills required to respond to their community’s immediate needs in the aftermath of a disaster, when emergency services are not immediately available. By working together, CERT volunteers can help save lives and protect property using the basic techniques in this course. The target audience for this course is individuals who desire the skills and knowledge required to prepare for and respond to a disaster. Our next class will be offered in March 2025.
